The Scenario Series: Winning over David?

David is a great guy. He was born to two wonderful Christian parents. His father lead his family well. Loving and always giving honor to his wife, as well as giving his life up for his children. David's mother was humble, quiet, and submissive to her husband as unto the Lord, nurturing her children in God's Word. David went to church will them all the time, and heard some good expository preaching. David is kind, gentle and sweet. He gives to the poor, and helps many who are in need. He is married and takes care of his family the same way he saw his father do. All of David's brothers and sisters are professing Christians. David is an atheist. He doesn't believe there is a God. He is not angry with Christians, he just doesn't believe in God. He's heard the expository preaching, been raised by Godly parents, and has seen his family live Christ before him. After all that, David refuses to believe there is a God.

David comes to work at your job. You observe David and see he doesn't outwardly do anything that would merit him not to be a Christian. He doesn't curse, swear, or get angry often. In fact David is very humble. He works hard and speaks evil of no one. You find out about David's family and that's when he tells you, "I am not a Christian, I don't believe there is a God!" What do you do? How does Christ work through you, to win David over? Do you hand David a tract? Do you explain to him the Gospel? He's heard it before right? David values your friendship. He loves you like a brother. How is David won over? How do you love David?

(PS - David can be turned to Christ. Leaving it in God's hands is not an answer. Christ has placed you in David's life, how does Jesus Christ win him over? Come one you strong evangelist, how does the Lord Jesus Christ save this one, because he is saveable? Okay, I'll help, we can apply the wisdom of scripture from John 3 when Jesus had discourse with Nicodemus)

  1. Well, bro, we know that the gospel of Jesus Christ is the power of God unto salvation (Romans 1:16). We also know that faith comes by hearing, and hearing by the word of God (Romans 10:17). But, how will they hear if there is no preacher? If they don't hear, how will they believe?

    From most people's perspectives, they'd probably consider David as a very humble guy. He definitely seems like a decent dude. However, when we begin to compare David to God's standard of good, David falls infinitely short.

    But, I don't think David is a humble guy. Anyone who refuses to acknowledge the existence of God, is not a humble person. In fact, that attitude is at the height of arrogance, considering that it is God who created us all, and has given us the knowledge of Him. However, as Romans 1 states, men hold this truth in unrighteousness. They attempt to hold it down and suppress it so that their conscience can be at ease with their sin. A prideful man will seek to eliminate God from the picture and claim that he is a good enough person on his own merits. Unfortunately, for him, God opposes the proud and gives grace to the humble.

    If I were in the situation, I'd appeal to David's conscience, which literally means "with knowledge." All men know that the things we do are wrong, for God has written His laws upon their hearts. But, this reality is often overlooked as man's pride seeks to acquit himself of wrongdoing, though his conscience condemns him. I'd take David through the law and show him why he is in grave danger because of a holy God who will judge him. Then, I would share with him what Christ did for all those who will turn from their sin and toward Him and believe the gospel.

    The Word of God goes out and never returns to Him void. It will do what it set out to accomplish, whether it is to convict and save the man, or to heap coals of judgment upon his head. Our job isn't to persuade men, but to be faithful in our preaching of the gospel of Jesus Christ. God does all the saving.

    Grace and peace

  2. Hey Mike;

    The Gospel of Jesus Christ is powerful enough to win any soul. Anyways, I believe appealing to his mind is exactly the thing. That would take the wisdom and love of Jesus Christ just like the discourse in John 3.

    Winning David takes spending time with him, of course letting him see your life and loving him. That's how his mind will be challenged. Well bro, I am UTAH right now but I'll see you Lord willing on Sunday at Hope. You can reach me also @ kmillz77@hotmail.com
